Monarchs are currently migrating to their overwintering grounds in California and Mexico. The monarch’s annual arrival in Mexico is a breathtaking natural phenomenon deeply intertwined with cultural traditions, particularly during Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead), traditionally celebrated at the end of October through November 2nd. As we approach Día de Muertos, we recognize the profound connections between monarch butterflies and the cultural and natural heritage of Mexico. Every year, millions of monarchs embark on an incredible migration, traveling thousands of miles to the mountains of central Mexico, where they find their critical overwintering habitat. This region is essential for the survival of the eastern monarch population, and its preservation reflects the shared commitment to conservation across borders. Check out this blog post to learn more about Monarchs and Día de Muertos in Mexico.

Just as monarchs depend on Mexico's forests for their survival, we rely on the collaborative spirit of communities in Mexico and throughout North America to ensure the protection of this iconic species. Together, we can make a difference in preserving monarchs for future generations.

Introducing the Mini Curso Monarca!

To deepen our collective understanding of monarch conservation, we’re thrilled to introduce our latest online course available on the Monarch NECTAR Hub: Mini Curso Monarca. This Spanish-language course provides an opportunity to explore one of nature’s most remarkable stories—the monarch's migration—all in Spanish.

Participants will learn about the monarch butterfly’s biology, migration, and the threats they face. The course also highlights how collaborative conservation efforts across countries help safeguard the future of these amazing pollinators.

Check out our latest Webinar…in Spanish!

We are excited to invite you to watch our latest webinar from the Monarch Conservation Webinar Series. Elementos fundamentales de la mariposa monarca was presented by Clarissa Ortega and Luis Osorio on October 22. Clarissa and Luis present a primer on monarchs including their life cycle, butterflies that mimic the monarch, and conservation efforts you can take. Watch the free recording here.

Resources for Monarch Conservation in Spanish and English

In addition to Mini Curso Monarca, we also offer an English version, Mini Monarch Essentials (with English and Spanish subtitles). Both courses are designed for anyone curious about monarch conservation, including families, educators, and monarch enthusiasts. The Spanish version even comes with Spanish subtitles, making it more accessible to Spanish-speaking communities.

We hope these new resources inspire more people to become stewards of monarch butterflies, creating stronger connections between communities and conservation efforts across the Americas. Don't forget to explore the free Spanish resources available on our website, as well as the monarch-themed items for sale in our store.

Gracias for supporting the monarchs, and celebrating with us this month!
