NEW - In-School Field Trips!
MJV staff will come to your classroom to lead a program on monarch migration!
Let experts from MJV lead your students through a lesson or activity focused on monarchs or pollinators.
Monarch Mishaps
This active game demonstrates the pressures monarchs face as they develop into adults. Your students will be immersed in the world of monarchs, each having a role to play. Some will be monarchs, searching for milkweed to lay their eggs. Others will be be pressures - predators, parasites, weather and more. The game culminates with some quick math to calculate survival rate, and discussions on what might be different about the outcome if different factors changed.
Grades: 3-5
Time: 45-60 minutes
Cost: $160
Meets NGSS DCI: 3-LS1.B: Growth and Development of Organisms, 4-LS1.A Structure and Function, 5-LS1.C: Organization for Matter and Energy Flow in Organisms, 5-LS2.A: Interdependent Relationships in Ecosystems; CC: Patterns, Energy and Matter; S&E: Analyzing and Interpreting Data, Asking Questions and Defining Problems
Monarch Migration Gliders
This hands-on, STEM-driven investigation dives into what it takes to glide through the air like a monarch. During the field trip, students will build model gliders, design a testing methodology, and record results for multiple trials. Field trips include a pre-visit lesson plan with access to virtual content about the North American monarch migration and post-visit follow up opportunities to deepen students’ understanding.
Monarch butterflies in eastern North America make a long and challenging journey to the mountains of central Mexico each fall. This field trip will explore when and why monarchs make this journey and support students in a STEM-driven investigation to dive deeper into how they travel so far.
The field trip is designed with a short pre-visit lesson to develop student background knowledge and a post-visit lesson to extend their learning.
Grades: 3-5
