Monarch Joint Venture Webinar: Community-Driven Conservation: How Alternare A.C. Protects Monarch Habitats and Empowers Rural Communities
Alternare A.C. is a non-profit founded in 1998 by two biologists and two farmers who combined their expertise in conservation and agroecology to show that community development and environmental conservation go hand in hand. Since then, Alternare has partnered with 37 rural and Indigenous communities across Mexico and Michoacán in the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve, positively impacting over 160,000 people.
Recognized nationally and internationally, Alternare has received awards including the 2018 "Conservation Champion" by the OAS and U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, and FAO’s recognition as one of Latin America’s top sustainable rural development initiatives. Other honors include awards from the Inter-American Development Bank, the UNDP, and the Tecnológico de Monterrey.
Today, Alternare’s team of 30 is dedicated to expanding their sustainable model to address urgent socio-environmental issues.
