Western Monarchs & More

The MJV California staff are committed to restoring and enhancing habitat in the West through a holistic and interconnected approach. With a special focus on California, MJV staff are advancing research, educating communities, and building relationships and partnerships to protect the western monarch population and to restore biodiversity and ecological resilience across the western landscape. This initiative works at the intersection of MJV’s four pillars of Habitat, Science, Education and Partnership to ensure long-term conservation success in California and the Western U.S. Through strategic partnerships, habitat restoration efforts, and community engagement, we aim to build a more resilient landscape for pollinators, wildlife, and people. Your support helps bring pollinator habitat back to the western landscape, ensuring that insects, animals, and humans alike benefit from a thriving, interconnected environment.

Why Focus on the Western Monarch?

The western monarch population has seen dramatic declines, with numbers plummeting due to habitat loss, climate change, and pesticide exposure. Unlike their eastern counterparts, which migrate to Mexico, Western monarchs overwinter along California’s coast and rely on native habitats throughout the western landscape. Western monarchs face a 99% probability of extinction within the next 60 years (US Fish & Wildlife Service, 2024), and proactive conservation is essential to secure their future.

Help Western Monarchs & More with a Donation Today!

Donate to the Monarchs & More Western Habitat Fund and help us provide essential resources like regionally appropriate seed mixes, native milkweed plugs, habitat monitoring, and educational materials. Your contribution—no matter the amount—plays a crucial role in supporting western monarchs, native pollinators, birds, mammals, and people who depend on a healthy and thriving ecosystem.

The Monarchs & More Western Habitat Fund isn’t just about saving one species—it’s about restoring biodiversity and ecological resilience across the western landscape. This initiative works at the intersection of science, partnership, habitat restoration, and education to ensure long-term conservation success.
