MJV’s newest partner is San Diego Zoo Global (SDZG). SDZG is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to “save species worldwide by uniting our expertise in animal and plant care and conservation science with our dedication to inspiring passion for nature.”

SDZG has been actively engaged in butterfly conservation for more than a decade, most recently with recovery programs for native imperiled butterflies such as the quino checkerspot butterfly and the Laguna mountains skipper. Within the past two years, SDZG has taken an active leadership role in coordinating monarch conservation activities and messaging locally and within the broader zoo and aquarium industry.

One of these projects includes serving as the vice leader of  the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ SAFE (Saving Animals From Extinction) North American Monarch Program Plan. This plan includes almost 80 partners across the country (including MJV!) and addresses conservation challenges and goals for both North American migratory populations of the monarch butterfly.

MJV is happy to continue our collaboration with SDZG initiated through the SAFE program for monarch butterflies by welcoming San Diego Zoo Global as an official partner of the Monarch Joint Venture.

The Monarch Joint Venture is a national partnership of federal and state agencies, non-governmental organizations, businesses and academic programs working together to conserve the monarch butterfly migration.
