Read these frequently asked questions to find the answers to your questions about MJV's remote sensing program. If your question isn't listed here, let us know and we will add it!

How can I get involved?

  • To become involved in MJV-led projects using remote sensing or request a conversation about how your company or agency may apply this technology in a conservation space, use the form linked on this webpage to express your interest. MJV will connect with you as projects relevant to your geography become available.

Technology: Software & Hardware

POLLi FAQ

Monarch Joint Venture utilizes the POLLi platform to generate flight plans, and analyze and report data. Please click the green button above to visit the POLLi FAQ for questions about the software and hardware, such as:

  • What types of sensors are supported in POLLi?
  • What drones are compatible with the remote sensing project?
  • At what altitude must the drone fly to collect the appropriate imagery?
  • Are the images stitched together?
  • Are you using any ground control points (GCPs)?
  • How much area (acres) are captured per image?

Regulations & Licensing

  • Do I need a specific license to conduct remote sensing surveys?
    • If you are conducting these surveys for something other than your own recreation, your activity falls under the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Small UAS Rule (Part 107), and you need to obtain a Remote Pilot Certificate. See Become a Drone Pilot for further instructions.

  • How do I know if there are any drone flight restrictions in my area?
    • The Aloft Air Control app is one option to check if there are any flight restrictions in your area. This app is approved by the FAA and can also be used to submit a LAANC request which allows you to fly in restricted areas if the request is approved. The app is available on IOS and Android as well as on their website.

Conservation Impacts and Value

  • How are these data shared/are these data public?
• The data that MJV collects from these images may be made public for high-level reports, such as summarizing the number of milkweed stems observed at a county level or within a certain land use type like rights of way. Some of our project participants allow their data to be shared for research purposes. POLLi software contains its own user agreement, which addresses data sharing and allows managers to customize data sharing options among their team members.

  • How does MJV avoid disturbing wildlife during drone flights?
    • To minimize wildlife disturbance during drone flights, we maintain a consistent path without hovering. If wildlife shows signs of distress, we pause the flight by either increasing altitude or returning to the starting point and resuming after wildlife activity ceases. If necessary, the flight is completed on a different day. These conditions may vary based on drone type and altitude. Additionally, our flights remain at least 660 feet away from any known active eagle nests, and operations are halted immediately if eagles are observed nearby. We collaborate with landowners and other key participants to identify potentially sensitive species and reduce disturbance on a case-by-case basis.
