Western Monarch Count marks another low year at coastal overwintering sites

From late November through early December 2025, hundreds of volunteers and partners participated in the effort, surveying 249 overwintering sites and recording a peak population of just 12,260 monarchs. While this is a slight increase from last season's 9,119, it is the third-lowest tally since the count began in 1997. Read More

The Integrated Monarch Monitoring Program (IMMP) plays a vital role in understanding monarchs and efforts to conserve them across North America. The IMMP collects information on monarch presence, habitat use, and the habitat characteristics of a site. It can be used on specific random sites to build a representative picture of monarch habitat, or at self-selected sites for monitoring a site of interest. Read More

Earlier this fall, the Monarch Joint Venture teamed up again with volunteers from NIPSCO to catch, tag, and release monarch butterflies. The tags used were from the Monarch Watch tagging program, a large-scale community science project initiated in 1992 to help understand the dynamics of the monarch's spectacular fall migration through mark-and-recapture.
