Field Technician, Monarch Butterfly Habitat Monitoring
Mónica is a late-season field technician for the Monarch Butterfly Habitat Monitoring program. Mónica supports MJV’s conservation efforts by traveling across California to identify and survey habitats available to Monarch butterflies using the Integrated Monarch Monitoring Program (IMMP). She grew up in Guatemala, where she and her family raised monarch caterpillars one year, and her interest in insects began. She moved to the United States when she was 10. Her love for insects and plants was cemented at UC Berkeley when she started working at the Essig Museum of Entomology. At the Essig Museum she worked on specimen digitization as well as participating in the California Insect Barcoding Initiative. She earned two degrees from UC Berkeley: a BA in Integrated Biology and a BA in Earth Sciences. In her free time, she likes to read and take naps. She’s currently trying to pick up running as well as photography.
